Yiwu for Kenyan importers: planning a business sourcing visit

Yiwu is the market Kenyan importers hear about second and usually should have visited first. It is built for exactly the order sizes most Kenyan SMEs place, and it rewards buyers who arrive with a list.

Understand the scale before you plan the days

The International Trade City is organised into districts by product family, and each district is large enough to consume a day on its own. A buyer who wanders without a category plan will see a great deal and remember very little. Pick the two or three districts that match your categories and treat anything else as a bonus.

A realistic daily plan

Two districts a day is ambitious; one district plus follow-up visits to shortlisted booths is productive. Build in an afternoon for revisits - the second conversation with a supplier is where quantities, lead times and samples actually get agreed.

Where to stay

Stay within a short drive of the market complex rather than by rate. Yiwu evenings are often spent consolidating samples, comparing quotes and messaging suppliers, and a long transfer at each end of the day quietly removes an hour of that.

Interpreters and samples

Booth-level English varies widely. An interpreter for the market days is not a luxury at SME scale, it is what makes price and MOQ conversations reliable. Agree a sample-handling plan before you start buying: what you carry, what is shipped, and who consolidates it.

Combining Yiwu with other cities

Yiwu pairs naturally with Shanghai as the international gateway, and with Guangzhou when a buyer wants both general merchandise and Canton Fair or manufacturing access. High-speed rail handles the connections well, but seats should be reserved in advance and travel days counted honestly against the working-day plan.

What Tulla arranges

  • Flights from Nairobi routed via a sensible gateway
  • Business visa documentation support and appointment staging
  • Hotels positioned for the trade city
  • Interpreters briefed on your product categories
  • Inter-city high-speed rail and airport transfers
  • Group manifests and daily movement sheets for buyer groups
  • On-trip coordination while the group is in market

Supplier selection, pricing, quality checks and shipping remain the importer's commercial responsibility.
