Amboseli National Park

About this trip

Amboseli is the only place on earth where you can photograph free-ranging African elephants - some of the largest tuskers left on the continent - framed against the 5,895m snow-capped summit of Mount Kilimanjaro across the border in Tanzania. The 392 km² park sits on a dried-up Pleistocene lake bed fed by underground springs from the mountain, creating year-round swamps that draw 1,600+ resident elephants, 400 bird species, hippo, hyena and the famous Big Tuskers monitored by the Amboseli Trust for Elephants since 1972. A short 220km drive or 45-minute scheduled flight from Nairobi makes this the most accessible iconic safari for executives, photographers and families with limited time.

Itinerary

1. Day 1

   Nairobi → Amboseli (road or air)

   Depart Nairobi 0700 via Emali on a tarmac road (4-4.5 hrs) or take a 45-minute Safarilink flight from Wilson. Lunch at lodge. Afternoon game drive through Sinet Causeway with elephant breeding herds and first views of Kilimanjaro emerging from afternoon cloud.

2. Day 2

   Full-day Amboseli exploration

   Pre-dawn departure for sunrise at Observation Hill - the best chance to see Kilimanjaro snow-cap before the cloud cover. Coffee in the bush. Track elephant super-tuskers around Ol Tukai, then siesta at lodge during midday heat. Afternoon drive to Lake Kioko swamps for hippo and lechwe. Sundowner with Maasai warriors.

3. Day 3

   Maasai community visit → Nairobi

   Final morning game drive en route to a community-vetted Maasai manyatta for an authentic visit (no staged tourist village). Lunch at lodge, then road or air transfer back to Nairobi by 1700.
