About this trip

Ethiopia is the only African nation never colonised, with a Christian Orthodox tradition dating to 330 AD and its own 13-month calendar, Ge'ez script and unique cuisine. The Historic Northern Circuit links four UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Lalibela's 11 monolithic rock-hewn churches carved downward into volcanic tuff in the 12th century by King Lalibela as 'New Jerusalem'; Axum, the ancient Aksumite empire's capital with its towering granite stelae and the alleged resting place of the Ark of the Covenant; the Simien Mountains National Park with its endemic gelada baboons, walia ibex and Ethiopian wolves; and Gondar, the 17th-century 'Camelot of Africa' with its castles. Best done by domestic flight between sites - overland is rough and slow.

Highlights

  • Eleven rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, including the cross-shaped Bete Giyorgis
  • Sunrise at the Lalibela complex when priests chant in Ge'ez
  • Northern Stelae Field of Axum (24m granite obelisk) and Queen of Sheba's bath
  • Trek with gelada baboon troops in the Simien Mountains UNESCO park
  • Gondar's Royal Enclosure with six castles and Fasilides' bath
  • Coffee ceremony - coffee was first cultivated here, in Kaffa province
  • Optional: Timkat Epiphany festival (19 Jan) - Africa's most spectacular religious event
