Climb the world's highest dunes at sunrise
The Namib is the world's oldest desert (55 million years) and Sossusvlei its most surreal corner - apricot-coloured dunes rising to 325 metres (Big Daddy is the tallest accessible dune on earth) framing the white clay pan of Deadvlei, where 900-year-old camel thorn skeletons cast graphic shadows across the cracked surface. The light at sunrise turns the dunes from vermillion to gold to honey within an hour. Namibia's stable democracy, excellent self-drive infrastructure, low population density (3 people per km², the second-lowest on earth) and dark-sky reserves make it perfect for photographers, couples and small private groups looking for a different kind of African adventure - no Big Five, but landscapes that don't exist anywhere else.
