Watamu & Malindi

Kenya's north coast, quieter sand and a protected marine reserve

4 to 7 days, built around your datesJul to Mar, with December the busiest festive window2 to 24 travellersLive rates on request

About this trip

Watamu and Malindi sit on Kenya's north coast, about two hours beyond Mombasa, and they are the choice for travellers who want the coast without the crowds. Watamu Marine National Park protects some of the best snorkelling water in the country, Mida Creek is a mangrove system worth an afternoon on its own, and the Gede ruins give a genuine historical outing a short drive inland. Malindi adds a longer beachfront and a strong Italian and Swahili food culture. Tulla coordinates the stay, the journey and the ground arrangements together, and every rate is quoted live for your dates rather than published in advance.

Highlights

  • Watamu Marine National Park, with reef snorkelling and turtle sightings in season
  • Mida Creek mangroves, boardwalk and birdlife at sunset
  • Gede ruins, a Swahili town abandoned in the seventeenth century
  • Arabuko Sokoke forest for birdwatching and shaded walks
  • Malindi's beachfront, markets and coastal food culture
  • Quieter, less built-up sand than the belt closer to Mombasa

    Nairobi to Watamu or Malindi

A half day inland to the Gede ruins and the forest edge, with a private vehicle and driver, then back to the beach for the afternoon.

  4. Departure

    North coast to Nairobi

Transfer to Malindi airport for the return flight, or back to Mombasa for the SGR, depending on how you travelled down.

Festive getaways

December and festive season 2026

The north coast is the festive alternative for travellers who find the belt north of Mombasa too busy. It takes a little longer to reach, which is precisely why it stays calmer over the holidays. Availability and rates are requested live for your dates.

For families

Good for families with children who can swim and snorkel, and for groups who want a house or several rooms together rather than a large resort.

For couples

One of the strongest couples options on the Kenyan coast: quiet sand, good food and reef water on the doorstep.

Ways to travel

  • Scheduled flight to Malindi with a road transfer to Watamu
  • SGR to Mombasa with an onward road transfer of about two hours
  • Private vehicle from Nairobi for door to door travel
  • Accommodation only, if you are driving yourselves

What to tell us when you enquire

  • Confirm nights, arrival date and any flexibility around the festive weekends
  • Tell us adults, children and their ages so rooming can be requested correctly
  • Choose your meal plan and say whether self catering suits you better
  • Request live December availability and rate; we confirm availability and final inclusions in writing

Compare this against the other festive options on our December holiday packages in Kenya page.

Weighing up alternatives? Zanzibar & Stone Town, Diani Beach or Mombasa, Nyali & Bamburi suit different travel days and budgets, and we are happy to quote more than one so you can compare properly.
